What we know
- Firefighters use a technique called "feel n search" they touch a wall and use that one wall to navigate through a pitch black dangerous building. If they had blueprints, could it help them navigate through the building?
- Firefighters have no idea what they're walking into. What if they had vital information displayed in an easy to read format right in front of them.
What we don't know
- What is the best method way for firefighters to study building data
- Did firefighters have enough time to use Firecloud while en-route to a call
User Interviews
We interviewed users at 5 different fire departments in Utah County and conducted user interviews with firefighters and a couple of captains. We found out that firefighters are aware of the problems they face with a lack of information. The firefighters were thrilled to hear about our ideas, they told us they have been left in dark when it comes to technology and that the latest tech they had was Bluetooth walkie talkies...
We asked them what information they would need to save a reasonable amount of time. They confirmed they would need 22 data points in order to save time. Simply knowing how many bedrooms, bathrooms, levels, etc. would save them 1-5 minutes depending on the size of the home.
User Journey Mapping
Initially we wanted build an iOS tablet app that firefighters could use before, during and after a fire. We made the mistake of thinking too big too fast. These were three different products with three completely different use cases. We decided to go narrow our focus and build an MVP to fit the pre-action needs of firefighters. The MVP would be a simple web app where firefighters view building information while en route to a call.
